2026 International Wushu Championships Held in Nassau, New York

On April 18, 2026, 2026 International Wushu Championships took place at Nassau Community College on Long Island, New York.

The event brought together over 300 martial artists from 14 U.S. states, Canada, and China. Participants ranged in age from five to over 80, demonstrating the sport’s broad appeal across generations and ethnicities.

The opening ceremony featured drumming and flag displays. Dignitaries including Nassau County Comptroller Elaine Phillips, North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, and Ma Xiaoxiao, Deputy Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in New York, delivered speeches emphasizing martial arts not only as a sport but also as a cultural bridge fostering community exchange.

The ceremony was hosted by Meng Li, Deputy Director of the Nassau County Asian American Affairs Office.

The competition was divided into three categories: modern martial arts, traditional martial arts, and tai chi. Events included powerful boxing routines, swift swordplay, rapid staff techniques, and steady tai chi movements. Organizers noted that 316 athletes participated this year, a significant increase from the 200+ attendees in the inaugural event. Nassau County provided strong support through its police and public works departments.

Several guests and officials spoke during breaks. Supervisor Jennifer DeSena praised Nassau County as a diverse and welcoming place, ideal for showcasing martial arts. A representative from the Ningbo Martial Arts Association expressed pride in being invited. Local businesses, including COWAY’s U.S. Chinese division and a family medicine clinic in Hicksville, sponsored and supported the event.
